Translation Request

Do you have a document written in French or Latin that you can't decipher ?

Maybe a Birth, Marriage or Death record ?

Possibly a letter from an ancestor, a will, deed, or Notarial Contract ?

Just ask AFGS !

We've been translating French and Latin records since 1978.

The AFGS volunteers can translate your French and Latin documents for a small fee.

Translation requests are reviewed to determine whether the document is in poor condition and/or unreadable in any way, before we proceed.

Depending on the type of document, the translation may take up to three weeks to complete.

If your request contains too many pages to complete in a reasonable time, AFGS may forward your request to a third party translation service. This is more common with Notarial Contracts and personal letters. If this occurs, the third party will contact you to make arrangements for your approval, before proceeding with the translation. They will bill you directly and your payment arrangements will be with them, not with AFGS.

To Submit Your Translation Request, just download the Mail-In Request Form and mail the completed form to AFGS.

If your translation request also includes a microfilm 'lookup', it will be billed separately from the translation fees. To request a microfilm 'lookup', please use our Microfilm Services.

The 'translation' service does not include research for lineages, pedigree charts or family group sheets. To request research, please use our Research Services.

AFGS charges a nominal fee for all Translation requests. Please note the following:
1. Prices (US$) are per record, except for multi-page documents (Notary Records, Letters) where prices are per page.
2. If AFGS determines that the document is not readable, there will be no charge from AFGS.
3. All translations will be sent to you via email.
4. Payment to AFGS from within the US may be made by check or credit card.
5. Payment to AFGS from outside the US must be paid by credit card only.
6. If AFGS determines the document is too lengthy, we will forward your request to a third party translator, and AFGS will not charge you.
7. Your agreement to use the third party translator is independent of AFGS, and you may accept of decline their service.
8. If you choose to use the third party service, their rates would apply, and they will bill you directly.
